Class Information Description

Level: Sharks

Class time: 8:00-8:40 am

Cost: $30/child

Goggles required.

The Shark Level is for children who have successfully passed the Dolphin level (see Dolphin Class Objectives). There is a teacher to student ratio of 1:3. This is an intermediate level course. A lifeguard is present. This course will focus on stroke proficiency (American crawl, and backstroke) and will aim to teach other swimming fundamentals.

Shark Class Objectives:

  • Recall 2 safe rules/practices when in/around water
  • Demonstrate start and glide on stomach for 10’
  • Demonstrate start and glide on back for 10’
  • Float on stomach for 10+ seconds
  • Float on back for 10+ seconds
  • Demonstrate rhythmic breathing with kickboard ½ length of pool
  • Demonstrate start, glide and crawl on stomach ½ length of pool
  • Demonstrate start, glide and crawl on back ½ length of pool
  • Dive from a squatting position and return to side of pool
  • Dive from a standing position and return to side of pool

*Participants must achieve all of the above skills before entering the Bronze level of the Flambeau Area Swim Team. This level meets a few evenings a week (November – March) and children have an opportunity to compete at swim meets.

Level: Dolphins

Class times: 8:45 AM-9:25 AM
OR 11:30 AM-12:10 PM

Cost: $30/child

Goggles highly recommended.

The Dolphin Level is for children who have successfully passed the Guppy level (see Guppy Class Objectives). There is a teacher to student ratio of 1:3. A lifeguard is also present. This is an advanced beginner level.

Dolphin Class Objectives:

  • Recall 1 safe rule/practice when in/around water
  • Submerge full head and body under water (bob) 5x
  • Demonstrate rhythmic breathing technique, poolside, 3x
  • Demonstrate streamline glide on stomach, 5’ to 10’
  • Demonstrate streamline glide on back, 5’ to 10’
  • Front crawl with kicking for at least 2 full arm rotations
  • Back crawl with kicking for at least 2 full arm rotations
  • Float on stomach for 5+ seconds
  • Float on back for 5+ seconds
  • Dive from a squatting position

*Participants must achieve all of the above skills before entering the Shark level class.

 Level: Guppies

Class times: 9:30 AM-10:10 AM
OR 10:45 AM-11:25 AM

Cost: $30/child

Goggles recommended.

The Guppy level is for beginning swimmers. The teacher to student ratio is: 1:2. A lifeguard is also present. Children must be at least 3 years old and potty trained to participate in this class.

Guppy Class Objectives:

  • Participate during safety lesson 1x
  • Proper hand, arm, & chin position for gliding/diving
    (Hand Sandwich, Diving Arms and chin positioned down)
  • Proper knee & foot position for kicking (pointed toes and straight legs)
  • Safe locomotion around edge of pool (Monkey Crawl)
  • Put face into water 1x
  • Submerge full head and body under water (bob) 1x
  • Demonstrate proper start with arms and legs (Starting ‘T’)
  • Demonstrate proper push off with legs (Rocket Blast)
  • Demonstrate front glide; 1 arm’s length to the teacher
  • Demonstrate back glide; 1 arm’s length to the teacher
  • Demonstrate arm motions for front and back crawl
  • Dive from a seated position with assistance

*Participants must achieve all of the above skills before entering the Dolphin level class.

Level: Turtles

Class time: 10:15 AM-10:40 AM

Cost: $25/Child

The Turtle level class is for very young children and their parent/guardian. There is an instructor and lifeguard present. Children ages 6 months to 6 years old. Parent or responsible adult must accompany child in the water. This is a water readiness class. Non potty-trained children must wear swimming diapers.

Turtle Class Objectives:

  • Move arms and legs freely; trunk support provided
  • Blow bubbles into or at the water; trunk support provided
  • Climb into pool
  • Climb out of pool

Level: Sunfish

Class time: TBD

Cost: $30/Person

The Sunfish level class is for children ages 6 to 16 who have a physical, emotional and/or cognitive disability. Parent or responsible adult (must be at least 18 years old) must accompany child in the water. This is a water readiness and beginning swimming class. Non toilet trained youth must wear protective undergarments in the pool (such as Swimmates Disposable Swimwear). There will be a lifeguard at the pool, a swim instructor to lead the class, and an individual assistant to help each child/parent team. Goggles are optional. Class size is limited to 5 youth.

Sunfish Class Objectives:

  • Climb safely into and out of the pool with supervision
  • Move safely around the edge of the pool
  • Begin rhythmic breathing
  • Learn arm and leg movements for swimming
  • Use a kickboard or adapted flotation device to move through the water 10 feet
  • Push off, glide and swim 10 feet

Level: Teen/Adult

Class time: 12:15 PM-12:55 PM

Cost: $30/Person

Goggles recommended.

The Adult/Teen Class is for beginners. Limit 5 participants in the class. There will be one lead instructor and a lifeguard present. The instructor will help each participant towards their own goal.

Class Instructor Assistants The Instructor Assistants are youth, 8th through 12th grade, who have swimming experience. They assist class participants (Guppy, Dolphin & Shark levels) to meet their full potential.
