The recent cold weather did not freeze the Flambeau Area Swim Team. FAST had sixty three swimmers bring their best and heat up the pool with some amazing swims at their recent home meet. The team competed against athletes from Bayfield, Eau Claire, Phillips, Rice Lake, and Tomahawk.
“I look forward to our home meets. I get a chance to see some of our kids race that do not usually compete on Saturdays. For some of the swimmers, our two home meets are the only meets they attend. It was an awesome day.”
Brooklyn Adisek, Kaylin Best, Harper Dean, Easton DeWitt, Zander Groothousen, Laren Hanson, Elijah Hendrick, Daniel Kottke, Ellie Lebal, Alex Mikunda, Aubrey Sampson, Gavin Stewart, Katie Vollendorf, and Payton Wold improved times in all of their events. The swimmer with the biggest time drop for the meet was Zander Groothousen. Zander took off a combined 26 seconds in his three events.
“I was especially happy for Zander. He took a year off from the team and found out he really missed it. We are very glad he is back in the pool.”
Zander earned place ribbons in all of his individual events and was a member of the winning 14 and Under boys medley relay. Other swimmers earning first place finishes on the day include: Sarah Allard, Mya Baselt, Olivia Bunton, Madeline Bunton, Samantha Burroughs, Elijah Hendricks, Erica Loe, Evan Loe, Michelle Gaddy, Cole Sanderson, Gavin Stewart, and Synjon Trott.
FAST also had 5 relays take home top honors. A tip of the goggles to Evan Loe and Synjon Trott who both broke team records. Synjon has the new team record for the 13 and 14 boys 1000 yard freestyle, and Evan broke a record previously held by Synjon in the 11 & 12 boys 200 yard freestyle. The coaches extend a fist bump to Gavin Stewart and Reese Roehl, who both made their second gold qualifying time and will join the gold squad for practices; and to Elijah Hendricks who made his platinum squad times.
Three swimmers posted championship meet times with their fast swims. Samantha Burroughs qualified for the Midwest regional meet in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle events, and Erica Loe made another Minnesota time in the 100 freestyle. Madeline Bunton posted her seventh Wisconsin State Meet time in the 200 freestyle and is just shy of National Age Group Meet time in the 50 freestyle.
“I am really proud of how hard everyone is working right now. Our practices have been solid. The kids are remaining focused and have set some pretty high goals for the year. There are still a number of meets remaining on our schedule, so I am excited to see what they are able to accomplish. It is a thrill to guide the kids through this process.”
FAST will travel to Rice Lake this Saturday, and then finish the regular season with a meet in Tomahawk the following weekend.
